Cefuroxime as antibiotic prophylaxis in coronary artery bypass grafting surgery

eComment: This study [1] supports the recently published Guidelines from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons practice guidelines for antibiotic prophylaxis [2, 3]. These excellent guidelines in part I support antibiotic prophylaxis for no more than 48 hours and in part II support a second generation cephalosporin for hospitals with a low level of MRSA. For hospitals with a higher incidence of MRSA however, vancomycin should be added to the cephalosporin (grade IIB recommendation). Any cardiac surgeons looking to review their antibiotic prophylactic regime will find these guidelines very helpful and user friendly and are also available on the STS website at: http://www.sts.org/sections/aboutthesociety/practiceguidelines/
