ESCVS adopts ICVTS as its official publication

The European Society for CardioVascular Surgery (ESCVS) is the oldest European Society devoted to cardiac and vascular surgery. As a matter of fact, the origins of the ESCVS go back to 1950 [1], when R. Leriche, J.C. Dos Santos, E. Malan, and G. Arnulf met in Paris, France, and decided to hold a meeting in Turin, Italy, on May 31, 1951, where the ESCVS was founded. The first congress of the European Society of CardioVascular Surgery was held in Strasbourg on October 5–6, 1952 [2]. In the same year, the ESCVS joined the International Society of Angiology as its European Chapter. The ‘International Society of Angiology’ became the ‘International Cardiovascular Society’ in 1957, the ‘International Society for Cardiovascular Surgery’ in 1981, and apparently, most recently, the ‘International Society of Vascular Specialists’.

Our American colleagues promoted this latest move, whereas for the Old World, there seems to be a tighter connection between the vessels, the heart, and even the lungs. As a matter of fact, interdisciplinary cooperation cannot only be achieved between surgeons and non-surgeons, but also between surgeons with related interests. There can be little doubt that, e.g. the development of synthetic grafts, stented grafts, and valved stents, towards bio-engineered grafts, and ultimately, autologous, bio-engineered grafts with or without valves, but mounted on bio-absorbable stents affects all of us with cardio-vascular and thoracic surgical practice.

At the 52nd Annual Congress of the ESCVS in Istanbul in November 2003, the Executive Committee, the assembly of the National Delegates, and the General Assembly of the Members, all voted in favour of adopting Interactive CardioVascular and Thoracic Surgery (ICVTS) as the official publication of the ESCVS. Half a year later, at the 53rd Annual Congress of the ESCVS in Ljubliana, the abstract book of the congress was already printed as a Supplement to ICVTS [3] and the final arrangements were made with ICVTS including the appointment of an ESCVS Editorial Board and two ESCVS Associate Editors, namely Edouard Kieffer from Paris, France, for vascular manuscripts, and Claudio Muneretto from Brescia, Italy, for cardiac manuscripts.

Interactive CardioVascular and Thoracic Surgery is a young publication, which will evolve in function of the quality of the scientific work submitted. ICVTS has, in addition to a traditional printed journal, a number of features taking advantage of the possibilities available through the internet. These include a fully electronic manuscript submission and review system at www.icvts.org [4], fast electronic pre-publication [5], public discussion by submission of comments of the readers and replies by the authors [6], and finally, the publication in print of the communications together with the on-line discussions in regular intervals. The public discussion of the pre-published communications as a virtual conference in conjunction with the combined publication in print of all, initial communication, comments, and replies by the authors is quite unique and certainly strengthens the impact of publications in ICVTS.

With the ESCVS adopting ICVTS as official journal and the anticipated growth, we will increase the publication rhythm of the printed journal from four issues per year to six. Of course, the electronic version of all publications and the corresponding discussions remain available on-line in the ICVTS archive section at www.icvts.org, where they can be searched and downloaded anytime [6].

In order to check out the full potential of Interactive CardioVascular and Thoracic Surgery just go to www.icvts.org now, submit your manuscript dealing with topics related to cardiac, vascular and thoracic issues, search the published and pre-published manuscripts. Feel free to comment the New reports open for discussion in the Interactive section and get back, a few days later, the response of the authors—just there on-line...

See you at www.icvts.org!
